Habitat Types

Habitat Types

“Habitat types” are defined as spatial units that are distinguished and identified based on dominant vegetation features and flora, or on their abiotic characteristics. Habitat types of European interest are protected under Directive 92/43/EEC.

Greece hosts 89 habitat types of European interest, approximately 38.2% of all habitat types protected by the European Habitats Directive (92/43/EEC).

The country monitors habitat types of European interest and submits every six years to the European Commission national reports on their status.

During the period 2013–2018, 48.31% of habitat types of European interest were assessed as having a Favourable Conservation Status, while 47.19% were assessed as having an Unfavourable/Inadequate Conservation Status. The Conservation Status remained unknown for 4.49% of the habitat types of European interest found in Greece.

The conservation and restoration of habitat types of European interest are national priorities (National Biodiversity Strategy, National Restoration Plan).
